On March 29, 2016, Miwa Somen became the 12th product registered under the Geographical Indications Protection System. All products produced after the registration have been subsequently shipped labeled with the "GI Mark". This system protects as intellectual property the names of products (geographical indications) that have obtained a reputation for high quality as a result of unique production methods cultivated over many years an natural characteristics of the area of production, such as regional climate and soil conditions. Only those products that meet the criteria are allowed to use the "Geographical Indication" and are granted the GI Mark.
